Collins graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1975. She worked for 12 years on the Capitol Hill staff of William Cohen. Collins joined the cabinet of Maine Governor John McKernan for fives years as Commissioner of Professional and Financial Regulation. She was elected for the senate in 1996 and was reelected in 2002 and 2008. Collins is a strong believer in Homeland Security and has signed many bipartisan legislation to strengthen it.
